Liverpool is the perfect choice to host Radio 1 Big Weekend – it’s a city renowned for its music, its heritage, some of the best audiences around and has a global reputation for staging incredible outdoor events. The event will also form part of Liverpool’s UN Accelerator City year.
As of November 2024, Liverpool is the first ever UN Accelerator City for Climate Action, which means the city has one year to pilot a series of exciting, boundary-pushing initiatives to look into how to make music events and TV/film productions as sustainable as possible. Radio 1 and Liverpool City Council will be working together to try and make this the most sustainable outdoor live music event ever produced in the city, in line with the BBC’s Sustainability programme and Liverpool City Council’s Accelerator City programme for climate action.

The event will operate under the existing Premises Licence for Sefton Park and will adhere to the conditions of the licence. It is being organised by a team with a long track record of delivering major live music festivals and events, and a dedicated noise management team will be in place to manage this area. There will be a dedicated helpline for any residents with any concerns including noise during the event, this phone number will be published nearer the time.
Liverpool is well versed in staging major, outdoor events – and Sefton Park has been a popular location for many years. There will be a comprehensive cleansing plan in place in the run up to, during and after the three-day festival, which will see the park kept clean and tidy. Organisers have, and will continue to, work with wildlife experts to ensure there is no detrimental impact on the natural habitats located in the green space.
It is the aim of the event organisers to minimise disruption as much as possible for regular users of Sefton Park. This is an extensive space of 200 acres and the event site will only take up part of it so there will still be plenty of space for the public to utilise and enjoy. In the lead up to the event and during the breakdown there will be some restricted areas as the event site is built / taken down. 75% of the park will still be accessible so you can visit it during the weekend without a ticket.
