Film and TV makers from across the globe are drawn to Liverpool City Region's iconic locations, unrivalled friendliness and thrilling atmosphere.
With 35 years experience in attracting film and TV productions to the Liverpool City Region, Liverpool Film Office has welcomed some huge productions over their tenure, from The Batman to Harry Potter , Liverpool is no stranger to the big screen. We've rounded up 10 films that have been filmed across Liverpool City Region to see if you can spot the locations next time you sit down for a movie night.
1. The Batman
If you didn’t know already, Liverpool is basically Gotham City!
Back in 2021, Liverpool welcomed Hollywood actor Robert Pattinson as he transformed into Bruce Wayne for Matt Reeves’ The Batman. The feature film saw St George’s Hall double up for Gotham City Hall while the Royal Liver Building doubled as the police department – who can forget that iconic shot of Batman flying from the top of the building to flee from officers. There’s also a scene at the end of the film where Batman drives through Anfield Cemetery on his ‘bat bike’ alongside Catwoman.
2. Yesterday
If there’s a film about The Beatles being made you can guarantee at least some of it will be filmed in Liverpool, the hometown of the Fab Four. 2019 saw the release of Danny Boyle’s ‘Yesterday’ which is based on a world where The Beatles don’t exist (we dread to think!) and the only person that can remember them is the lead character, Jack. To help him bring the songs back to life he visits Liverpool for a bit of Beatles inspiration.
If you fancy walking in Jack’s footsteps head along to Penny Lane, the Port of Liverpool Building, Queensway Tunnel, Strawberry Field and Lime Street Station to recreate those film scenes.

3. Captain America
Two Grade II listed listed buildings in the Stanley Dock, Vauxhall area of the city were used for filming 2011 American superhero film Captain America: The First Avenger. The scene that was shot is one of the main action set pieces in the movie, and saw 500 cast and crew descend on the city to film.
It took over a month for set dressers to turn the Victorian dockland into a convincing 1940’s New York, with the later additions of period cars and costumes.
Stanley Dock has also been used to film Sherlock Holmes, starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law.

4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1
Up to 90,000 vehicles pass through Liverpool’s Mersey Tunnels every day, but only one famous blue motorbike with sidecar has made the journey.
In the chaotic scene featured in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1, Hagrid and Harry Potter embark on a dangerous chase and zoom through the Birkenhead Queensway underground tunnel, narrowly missing the oncoming traffic. We wouldn’t recommend it!

5. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
It seems the wizarding world can’t get enough of Liverpool as they returned to the city in 2015 to film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Eddie Redmayne took on the role of Newt Scamander who’s search for these fantastic beasts finds him in Liverpool’s St Georges Hall and the Cunard Building which were transformed into 1920s New York.

6. Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool
As the title suggests, the majority of this blockbuster movie featuring Jamie Bell, Annette Bening and Julie Walters was filmed on the streets of Liverpool. Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool follows the true story of a young lad from the city who falls in love with an ageing Hollywood star in the 1970s.
Filming locations include Philharmonic Dining Rooms, the Liverpool Playhouse, Ye Cracke pub and the Georgian Quarter giving you a pretty good tour of Liverpool in the film!
7. Tolkien
Fans of Lord of The Rings will be impressed with this one. In 2017, the biopic surrounding JRR Tolkien was partly filmed in Liverpool at some impressive locations such as Liverpool Town Hall, St George’s Plateau, and Dale Street.

8. Florence Foster Jenkins
Liverpool went all Hollywood in 2016 when Academy Award winning Meryl Streep and BAFTA winner Hugh Grant turned up in the city to film scenes for Florence Foster Jenkins. The crew turned Liverpool's Business District into 1940s New York. It's said that New York's grid system of roads is based on Liverpool City Centre's layout so it's the perfect place to film without the congestion of New York.

9. Fast and Furious 6
Fans of the Fast & Furious series might recognise a bit of Liverpool in the 6th film. In 2012 cast and crew spent four days in the city around Liverpool Town Hall, Dale Street and the Birkenhead tunnel shooting hair raising stunts for the popular car themed franchise.
10. Alfie
Jude Law starred in the remake of the Michael Caine original, with Liverpool Dale Street doubling for New York City. The 2004 film was written, directed, and produced by Charles Shyer, and based on the 1966 British film of the same name which in return is adapted from a novel and play of the same name by Bill Naughton. The first shot of Liverpool we’re given is Formby beach when Alfie has driven out of Manhattan to see his old friends. Liverpool’s second appearance is on Brunswick Street when Alfie goes to buy flowers in pursuit of Liz. The extravagant flower shop he purchases from, is now a restaurant called The Restaurant Bar & Grill.
