An unmissable Christmas experience for tens of thousands of families, Liverpool Cathedral will be transformed into a breathtaking world of light, sound and storytelling this festive season as Noël, created by Luxmuralis, makes its world premiere, promising a magical experience on an extraordinary scale.
From 27th November to 5th December, witness Liverpool Cathedral transform into a living canvas, where every archway, ceiling and stone comes alive with astounding projections, immersive soundscapes and stories that journey through Christmases past to unlock treasured memories.
The projection artworks are created by Luxmuralis, the artistic collaboration between Artistic Director and Visual Artist, Peter Walker, and composer, David Harper, brought to life by a talented team of technical specialists. Together, they transform the Cathedral into an extraordinary immersive Christmas experience for all ages, bringing together light, music, art and architecture.
This year also introduces Constellation, a new piece of artwork by artist, Peter Walker, featuring thousands of paper stars carrying messages of hope and reflection from local school children, forming a ‘galaxy of voices’ within the Cathedral. Created with participation at its heart, the installation invites children and young people to explore themes including light and darkness, hope, belonging and community, before creating their own star to become part of the piece
For the first time, the Cathedral’s Derby Transept will become home to Constellation, a sculptural artwork formed from thousands of delicate paper stars, each carrying a personal message of hope, love or reflection from local schoolchildren. A specially created Key Stage 2 and 3 resources will also support pupils to explore the symbolism of stars at Christmas, develop creative writing skills and use imagery to express their own ideas
Schools can also visit the Cathedral to create their own star, with their individual contributions ultimately becoming part of the wider installation
Together, these individual contributions create a glowing celestial landscape – a ‘galaxy of voices’ within the Cathedral. At its heart, Constellation is an artwork about participation and togetherness, bringing the thoughts and hopes of young people together to create a shared piece that can be experienced throughout the light and sound installation.
The Very Revd Dr Sue Jones, Dean of Liverpool, said:
“At the heart of Noël is the extraordinary Christian proclamation that light enters the darkness and love comes among us in the birth of Jesus. The thousands of stars created by children across our region will remind us both of the star that guided people towards Christ and of our shared longing for peace, love and reconciliation in our world. Liverpool Cathedral exists as a place of encounter and welcome. We look forward to opening our doors to people of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs as we share the hope of the Christmas story via this amazing new addition to the show.”
Peter Walker, Artistic Director, Luxmuralis, said:
“We are delighted to bring Noël to Liverpool Cathedral, creating an immersive light and sound experience that celebrates the wonder, beauty and spirit of Christmas. Through light, music and projection, we are inviting visitors to pause, look up and experience the cathedral in a completely new way. Noël is an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together, share in the magic of the festive season and discover the extraordinary beauty of this iconic space.”
