Please plan your journey in advance and check for road closures.

Liverpool City Region is well-connected to the UK motorway network. From the M6 take the M62, M58 or M56 direct to the destination.

To travel to Wirral Peninsula from the city centre, take the Mersey Tunnel and don’t forget the toll money! If you’re heading up to the coast, Southport is an enjoyable coastal drive away. The Silver Jubilee Bridge in Runcorn crosses the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal to provide convenient road access to Halton. Knowsley and St Helens are easily accessible too, both only a short drive from the city centre.

How to reduce impact on your journey

  • Plan ahead and consider your alternative travel options. You can use the Merseytravel journey planner
  • Check timetables and leave more time for your journey
  • Don't aim for the last bus or train home as services are likely to be very busy
  • Stick to public transport wherever possible to reduce congestion on key routes in and out of the city centre, including Mersey Tunnels

Liverpool Lime Street Upgrade

As part of an upgrade plan by Network Rail, Liverpool Lime Street Station will be undergoing major engineering work.

Passengers who would normally travel to or from Liverpool via Lime Street Station will be affected by this, so please find out more information about the project here.
