Liverpool is no stranger to the silver screen. With its stunning architecture, vibrant streets, and diverse landscapes, the city has played a starring role in countless films and TV shows.
Whether you're a film buff or just looking for a unique way to explore Liverpool, this itinerary takes you through some of the city’s most iconic film locations.
Day 1: Classic Hollywood & British Cinema
Morning: St George’s Hall & the Georgian Quarter
Start your cinematic adventure at St George’s Hall, one of Liverpool’s most visually striking buildings. This neoclassical masterpiece has been featured in films such as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and The Batman, doubling as Gotham City Hall. Take a guided tour or simply admire the grandeur of the hall’s exterior.
From here, wander through to the Georgian Quarter, an area with beautifully preserved 18th-century streets that have appeared in British dramas such as Peaky Blinders and The Crown. Stop by Falkner Street, which has been used to depict Victorian London in various period dramas before arriving at Hope Street - a street bookended by Liverpool’s two Cathedrals.
A visit to both are a must on your trip to Liverpool but if you’re looking for more film locations, then stop by Liverpool Cathedral as a location used for filming Peaky Blinders.
Afternoon: Liverpool Waterfront & The Three Graces
Head towards the stunning Liverpool waterfront, home to the iconic Three Graces – the Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building, and Port of Liverpool Building. This area has been transformed into everything from 1960s New York in The Crown to The Batman’s Gotham City and even the setting for a Taylor Swift music video!
Whilst you’re here, you can explore the very place Batman escaped from a police chase on top of the Royal Liver Building on the RLB360 Tour. The tour takes you around Liverpool’s most famous landmark, explaining the history of the building and giving you a behind-the-scenes tour before heading to the top for the 360 views.
After that, head into the Cunard Building, the very one Taylor Swift filmed her music video for ‘I Can See You (Taylor’s Version)' in, to explore The British Music Experience. The museum tells the story of British music from the 1920s to present day through 100s of items of music memorabilia from everyone including The Beatles, Adele, The Spice Girls, David Bowie and lots more.
Evening: The Cavern Quarter & Mathew Street
As night falls, explore the world-famous Cavern Quarter, where productions like Tin Star, Midas Man and Across The Universe have been filmed.
Grab a drink at The Cavern Club, where The Beatles famously performed 292 times, and enjoy live music in a setting steeped in cinematic and musical history.
Day 2: Action & Sci-Fi Liverpool
Morning: Royal Albert Dock
Start your day at Royal Albert Dock, a historic location with stunning waterfront views across the preserved warehouses. This dock has been featured in numerous films and TV series, including Dr Who, Top Boy and Breaking Point, making it a prime location to visit for film fans.
Whilst you’re here explore the dock’s museums, galleries, and restaurants while soaking in its cinematic atmosphere. Visit The Beatles Story, the world’s largest permanent exhibition telling the story of The Fab Four, head on a tour with Splash Tours or take in the sights around the history docks.
Afternoon: The Queensway Tunnel & Museum of Liverpool & The Coast and Country
Next, venture on a tour of the Queensway Tunnel, stay with us on this one…
The Mersey Tunnel Tour is one of Liverpool’s hidden gems which takes you on a tour of the famous Queensway Mersey Tunnel which opened in 1934. What’s the film link you ask? Well Harry Potter and Fast and Furious have both used the tunnel for filming!
After that head over to the Museum of Liverpool to explore their Wondrous Place Gallery. The gallery tells the story of Liverpool’s famous movie stars, TV greats, sport stars and literary figures. See costumes worn by Jodie Comer in Killing Eve and a flat cap from the Peaky Blinders series.
Conclude your cinematic afternoon with a visit to the coast and the countryside of Southport and Wirral. These area’s diverse landscapes have provided the setting for various film and TV productions. The charming village of Port Sunlight—featured in Midas Man and Peaky Blinders—in Wirral offers a perfect mix of scenic beauty and film history. Explore the Port Sunlight museum, visit the Lady Lever Art Gallery or just take a walk around the picturesque village.
For fans of Peaky Blinders, a trip to Formby Beach is a must. This stunning coastal location was used as a filming site for key scenes in the series, offering an atmospheric blend of sand dunes and dramatic shoreline.
Evening: A Film at FACT
End your film-inspired journey at FACT, one of Liverpool’s independent cinemas. Catch a screening of a classic or contemporary film, then reflect on your cinematic adventure over a drink at one of the nearby bars on Bold Street.
