A detailed description of Checkmate for those who are visually impaired

Checkmate is an immersive, larger-than-life installation designed to make participants feel as though they have shrunk and are walking across a giant chessboard. Spanning an impressive 16 meters by 16 meters, the chessboard is topped with enormous inflatable chess pieces. As you move through this space, you are surrounded by playful, oversized chess pieces in bold black, white, and yellow colors, with minimalistic patterns inspired by the Bauhaus movement.

As night falls, the experience transforms as the chess pieces illuminate, casting a magical glow across the board and inviting visitors into a unique and whimsical world. The installation offers a blend of art, design, and interactive play, making it accessible and engaging for all ages.

A detailed description of Checkmate for those who are hearing impaired

Checkmate features an original music score by Otis Studio, enhancing the immersive experience with a modern electronic composition. The music is characterized by playful robotic sounds, creating the sensation that the giant chess pieces are mechanically moving around the board. This auditory element adds a layer of depth to the installation, making it feel as though the chessboard is alive with activity, perfectly complementing the visual and interactive aspects of the piece.

Visual and Light considerations

The lighting element of this installation consists of ambient white light inside the oversized inflatable chess pieces.

  • Whilst the installation itself does not contain any seating areas, benches are situated in the vicinity of the installation in the area.
